Sydney Sweeney is back in the headlines over yet another advertisement controversy — this time, her near-nude appearance in an ad for a sports betting site that had some female athletes accusing her of setting women’s sports back with the imagery.
The cohosts ofThe View discussed the story on Monday’s (September 14) live show, and while some of the cohosts reacted to her posting photos of other female athletes (like Serena Williams and Ronda Rousey) posing nude, and others defended her right to do whatever she likes with her body, Sara Haines wanted to redirect the entire conversation.
“I think Sydney Sweeney is allowed to use her sexuality however she want, and female athletes are allowed to be outraged that they’re once again being defined by their bodies and not their talents. But the bigger problem to me … is that sex and celebrity are being used to normalize gambling. They’re missing the message,” Haines said.

Alyssa Farah Griffin echoed Haines’ statement, saying, “I feel like we’re talking around the part that matters the most. Sydney Sweeney’s going to be Sydney Sweeney. She’s a good businesswoman. She’s comfortable being naked. She is going to monetize that, and more power to her. But I don’t love that gambling has just become something that we’re all just doing all the time. I read, I looked it up, men make up two-thirds of sports betting, so of course, she’s got an equity stake in this company. What’s the best way to get men to click? Show your boobies. I just don’t love, though, that we’ve become a society that we’re like, this vice that has really damaged a lot of people and hurt a lot of people is just completely [fine].”
Whoopi Goldberg did contradict her cohosts, saying, “I am a gambler. I enjoy gambling.”
“You’re not a degenerate gambler, though,” Griffin countered.
“Well, you don’t know that!” Goldberg joked. “I think adults make decisions for themselves and that’s OK.”
