Memory rarely arrives as a complete narrative. More often, it announces itself through fragments: the smell of suntan lotion, children laughing in a backyard, a familiar recipe or the sensation of a parent’s hand. On “Glimpses,” the Canadian composer and pianist Bonnie Milne translates those involuntary recollections into music that moves between contemplation and momentum.
Featuring percussionist Dave Hewitt, the piece begins patiently. Milne’s piano establishes a reflective atmosphere without treating nostalgia as uncomplicated comfort. The phrases feel suspended, as though each has surfaced unexpectedly and requires a moment of recognition. Her restraint is crucial. Rather than forcing listeners toward a predetermined emotional response, she creates room for them to enter with memories of their own.
The composition’s movement between major and minor harmonies supplies its central tension. Major chords illuminate the past with warmth, but that brightness is repeatedly shaded by minor turns. The effect is less a dramatic contrast than a continual emotional recalibration. Gratitude and grief do not appear as opposites here; they occupy the same musical space.
Milne eventually quickens the tempo, shifting from reflection into a more animated allegro. This change could have divided the work into two distinct emotional episodes, but the performance instead suggests an evolution. The memories remain present even as the music gathers speed. Nostalgia becomes energy, and looking backward gradually develops into a willingness to move forward.
Cellist Kevin Fox gives the arrangement its most grounded lyricism. His countermelodies deepen the piano’s introspection without merely doubling its sentiment. Violinist Drew Jurecka brings a contrasting agility, his line sounding playful in one moment and searching in the next. Their contributions broaden the composition’s emotional field while preserving the piano as its narrative center.
Hewitt’s percussion is similarly attentive. His timpani-like figures add a distant resonance to the slower passages, suggesting something remembered from across time. In the allegro, those same rhythmic instincts become propulsive. He does not overpower the chamber textures; he provides the force that allows them to advance.
Recorded at Villa Sound in Collingwood, Ontario, with engineer Adam Fair, “Glimpses” benefits from a sound that is intimate without feeling confined. The cello has weight, the violin retains its brightness, and the percussion possesses depth without obscuring Milne’s touch at the keyboard. The ensemble can sound close enough for private reflection and spacious enough to accommodate its increasingly cinematic sweep.
“Glimpses” succeeds because Milne does not attempt to recreate the past. She understands that memory changes each time it is revisited. Her composition honors what has disappeared while resisting the temptation to remain there. By the closing stretch, forward motion does not erase longing; it carries that longing into a different shape.
The result is a tender contemporary classical work about remembrance as an active process. Milne’s memories may be personal, but her musical language makes them broadly recognizable: moments returning without warning, glowing briefly, and vanishing just as life begins moving again.
