Primetime’s big climax involves To Catch a Predator’s trip to Texas, where the show partners with local law enforcement (including Bokeem Woodbine’s chief of police) to root out potential sexual predators. Perverted Justiceidentifies a potential target in the region, who turns out to bea district attorney named Bill (played by Alex Winter). When Billremains wary about accepting thedecoy’s invitation, Hansen, his crew, and the police travel tohishome and prepare to raid it.As Dan the decoy (Skyler Gisondo) tries to keep Bill distracted by singing a song from the musicalRent, police break into his house and Bill commits suicide by shooting himself in the head.

These events are based on a real incident that occurred in the Dallas area in November of 2006; they’rechronicled in detail intheEsquirearticle that serves asPrimetime’s source material. The film version fudges and exaggerates some of the details — in the movie, the raid on the ADA’s home occurs at night, in reality the police arrived at the house in themorning — but the broader points are largely accurate:To Catch a Predator went to Texas, idenified an assistant district attorney named Bill Conradt as a potential predator, and when they realized he was not going to travel to the location they were using for their televised sting, they instead went to his home. With a SWAT team closing in,Conradt shot himself in the head.

As of this writing, Jurassic World is the tenth-highest grossing film in the history of cinema, with $1.67 billion in worldwide ticket sales. It not only tops all the other films in the franchise (including the original), it earned more money than such popular hits as The Avengers, Barbie, and both Frozen films. Jurassic World relaunched a franchise that most people had written off, sparking at least three more sequels, plus several animated TV series. It also got generally positive reviews from critics, and it holds a positive average score on Letterboxd. And it is … an inherently dumb premise filled with not-very-bright characters who almost seem to want to be eaten by dinosaurs given the choices they make? I still don’t understand why you would genetically engineer any dinosaur that would be especially smart and violent under any circumstances; much less why you would give what is ostensibly a billion-dollar zoo animal magical camouflage powers. (What good is a dinosaur as a theme park attraction if no one can see it?!?) I love a good disaster film as much as the next guy, but we all deserve better than this.
