But critics by and large have liked the vast majority of Waititi’s work — includingJojoi, which Waititi says critics “hated.” In fact, that film holds a “Certified Fresh” 81 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, an overwhelming consensus of positive reviews. If a few critics disliked it, a higher percentage of them still recommended it than “the people” that Waititi supposedly listens to did for Klara and the Sun. In other words: More critics likedJojo Rabbit than audiences likedKlara and the Sun.

Bad by design, good by accident.

Arguably the first of these dumb-by-design horror comedies was Attack of the Killer Tomatoes, which was conceived in the 1970s as a spoof on the monster-focused B movies that had dominated the airwaves in the era of nuclear paranoia and the Cold War. America was constantly being invaded by giant insects, giant lizards, even giant people — so it was only a matter of time before we got to giant man-eating tomatoes. The plot, such as it is, follows a group of specialists chosen by the president to discover the cause of a national killer tomato epidemic, which quickly devolves into an all-out world war of man vs. fruit. The only thing that can defeat the tomatoes is a terrible pop song called “Puberty Love,” which causes the tomatoes to shrink until they can be stomped on. The plot is goofy, the effects are terrible, and the one legit special effect — a real helicopter crash — was captured on camera completely by accident and later incorporated into the movie (the pilot was unharmed).
