The dual titles, one big and one small, introduces one ofRocky’s most important and prevalent themes: The gulf between people’s big dreams and their hopeless realities, and the struggle to press onward when that gulf seems insurmountable and everyone around you makes you feel small. Awards experts often discuss “narratives” and their impact on the Oscar race; the uplifting (or disturbing) behind-the-scenes stories that shape the winners of these prizes as much (or more) than the actual onscreen performances. Sylvester Stallone arguably had the greatest Oscar narrative of all-time:Anout-of-work actor, Stallone wrote Rocky’sscreenplay in three days and then — despite his financial desperation — refused to let anyone else play the title role, even though his obstinance imperiled the massive paycheck he could have received had he allowed producers to cast an established leading man as Rocky Balboa.

Stallone bet on himself, convinced the powers that be to give him the role, and then delivered a terrific performance. ThenRockybecame the single biggest box-office hit of 1976, turning Stallone from a nobody to a massive movie star almost overnight. It’s a great Oscar narrative, even if Stallone ultimately lost the year’s Best Actor prize to the late Peter Finch fromNetwork, and the Best Original Screenplayaward to that film’s writer, Paddy Chayefsky.

It’s the best sports movie franchise in history —but the Rocky and Creed series have had their highs and lows. Here they are:

Rocky V (1990)”,”photo-description”:”
The key issue with Rocky V may be a core contradiction in its basic concept. It was clearly designed with a “back to basics” approach in mind; for the first time since the original film, John G. Avildsen returned as director, and for the first time in many years, Rocky was depicted as a working-class guy from Philly, rather than a wealthy, glamorous celebrity. (Supposedly a crooked accountant stole all of Rocky’s money, and a head injury forced him into early retirement.) The setting might be a bit more street-level, but the story is still fairly outlandish, especially when Rocky battles his new protégé, Tommy “The Machine” Gunn (Tommy Morrison), in a street fight. It’s not as bad as its reputation — and it could have been worse if Stallone had stuck with original ending, where Burgess Meredith returned as the ghost of Mickey, beckoning Rocky to keep fighting — but it’s undoubtedly the messiest entry in the franchise.
