James Gunn confirms creative changes to DCU’s Batman plans
DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn confirmed on Threads that the creative plans for The Brave and the Bold have changed since the project’s 2023 announcement. A fan asked Gunn directly whether the DCU Batman plans had shifted creatively. Gunn replied with a simple “Yep,” offering no further details.
This latest confirmation follows Gunn’s earlier comments in an IGN interview, where he addressed the film’s evolving direction. He told IGN that while he liked where The Brave and the Bold script was, “plenty of things are in flux.” When asked whether the film would feature a Batman old enough to have an approximately 10-year-old Damian Wayne, Gunn responded that some things had changed, including details about Bruce Wayne’s “parentage” situation.
Gunn was pressed for clarification on whether Damian Wayne is still in the movie. He responded, “I think you have to wait to see exactly what’s happening.” The character was originally central to the film’s pitch when Gunn first unveiled the DCU slate in January 2023. At that time, Gunn described the project as a father-son story based on Grant Morrison’s comic book run.
Gunn also noted that numerous high-profile actors have expressed interest in the Batman role, stating that it would be harder to find actors who don’t want to play the character. Christina Hodson joined the project in January 2026 to write the screenplay. Andy Muschietti remains attached to direct.
The film still lacks a release date, and Gunn has previously said he would not want to compete with Matt Reeves’ The Batman Part II. A Deadline report from October 7, 2026, noted the film remains in early development. The Threads exchange took place hours after the Clayface premiere, which Gunn called his “favorite premiere in a long time.”
