Following on from our review of CANNING‘s new single, ‘Solitude‘, we spoke with the band themselves and asked them a few questions about their music, their inspirations, and what lays in their future.
How did the three of you meet and start the band?
Tom and Ricky met in high school during senior year and started jamming together in a friend’s basement…that friend was Joel (bass), along with Bob (keyboard). After high school, Tom joined a band that Fritz was playing rhythm guitar in, which needed another guitarist…Tom called Ricky and since that first rehearsal, a connection was made and set up a decision that was made many years later. After the split in Mos Isley around 2002, Tom and Ricky needed a bass player to form a trio…the ultimate bare-bones rock being the intended direction. Ricky had heard Fritz was playing bass at the time, so the hunt began to find him and ask if he wanted to play in the band!
You all have different musical influences. How do they come together in your music?
It’s honestly a huge melting pot of sonic textures that tug and pull in so many directions…hence the music, when played live, can become another whole vibe by simply one note’s texture and a simple change in a formulated hi-hat beat…the songs move as life moves.
What do you enjoy most about playing together?
Simply spending the time still playing after so many years, since our love of music is a necessity that must be filled and expanded upon.
What makes a CANNING live show special?
The songs play the band, and sometimes the songs want to go elsewhere, which makes for an adventurous looseness or the song wants to be tight and very direct…ya never know till that present moment.
Do you like to improvise when you play live?
Improvisation is a key element to the underlying fundamentals and structure of CANNING, which ultimately is a rock trio but has the capability to enter chaos rather quickly and freely.
Has a song ever gone in a completely different direction during a show?
Oh, so many times…off the rails, on the toes…in the realm of wonder…
How has the band changed over the years?
Understanding what was penned years back can take a long time to understand what was actually meant in those words…never thought some would have taken a decade.
What do you think each member brings to the band?
Life…
What do you hope people feel when they see CANNING live?
Anticipation, release, and being present…
What’s next for the band, and is there anything else you’d like to share with your fans?
Simply that we will continue to exist as long as we can breathe and play our instruments…we will be there…
