Beneath the sunshine and haze of reformed indie duo Girlhood’s breezy new sound are lyrics that cut right through to the insecurities and imperfections we often conceal from one another. Playing out like a nostalgic time-lapse,‘Picnic’uses food – think a spread full of picky bits and sweet treats – as a bittersweet sugarcoating.
The escapism that defined their sunlit debut,‘Lemon Aid’, is still present: a whirlwind of chunky rhythms and soft, overlapping harmonies that transport you to a colourful, dreamy soundscape. But this time, the reality is considerably messier. The track playfully explores complex desire, longing, and the expectation of constant fulfillment – much like trying to sustain the feeling of a feast at the end of a long day.
With a sprinkle of sparkling saxophone, mellow piano, and the quintessential laid-back groove central to their charm,‘Picnic’ is both uplifting and thought-provoking – a clear sign of a band that has locked into its signature sound. The result is sweetly nostalgic and effortless to listen to.
As a figurative first taste of their forthcoming album,‘This Will Make Sense In The End’,‘Picnic’delivers with flair. The project was born out of lineup changes, major life events, and the clarity that comes with a new phase of life – specifically, the peace, serenity, and quiet of the leafy Cotswolds, far away from the bustle of navigating life as musicians in their twenties.
