R&B newcomer Jaymin will drop his second project of the year before the end of summer. The Seattle native has announced his new EP, STATIC, will release Sept. 18 via Warner Records.
The project will include “Proud” and the freshly shared “Rollin.” Produced by Sango and Chase N. Cashe, the latter track, which includes a sample of Gucci Mane’s “Pillz,” contemplates the future of a relationship, leaving Jaymin wondering if his partner is in it for the long haul. “I’ve been going through the motions / I’m in need of clarity and peace of mind / Can you tell me where we going?” he sings.
“‘Rollin’ embodies both the desire to keep something alive and the question of whether the other person feels the same,” says Jaymin. “Inspired by the chorus on Gucci Mane’s ‘Pillz,’ it uses the same words, but approaches the subject from a more vulnerable perspective, capturing the uncertainty of a relationship that may or may not be reaching its end.”
He continues, “The song also marks a shift in my sound. In that sense, ‘Rollin’ asks the same question to two different people: one to the person at the center of the story, and the other to the listener.”
STATIC will follow Jaymin’s debut EP, Sweet Nothings, which arrived in February. While the latter project celebrated love’s highs, STATIC will explore moments when that connection gets tested.
In an interview with Rated R&B, Jaymin teased the direction of his next project. “It’s not glorifying anything negative, but it is being honest about the negative side of love and things that do happen,” he told the publication. “Sweet Nothings is more of a honeymoon phase story. My next project is more of a ‘we in the thick of it’ story.”
