Thirty years after big beat’s opening statement, Fatboy Slim is giving his debut album the deluxe treatment. Norman Cook announced an expanded 30th anniversary reissue of “Better Living Through Chemistry,” due this September via Skint Records, spanning a half-speed mastered 2LP edition, a 2CD set with a bonus disc of B-sides and rarities, and a digital edition with expanded reworks, according to the announcement. Originally released in 1996, “Better Living Through Chemistry” was the record that turned Cook — already a veteran of The Housemartins, Beats International, and Freak Power — into Fatboy Slim, and helped define the big beat blueprint: hip-hop breaks, acid squelch, garage-rock swagger, and hooks big enough to fill festival fields. Tracks like “Everybody Needs a 303” and “Going Out of My Head” set the table for the world-conquering “You’ve Come a Long Way, Baby” two years later, and the album’s DNA is still audible every time a producer drops a filthy breakbeat behind a chunky sample.
The anniversary package leans into both nostalgia and the present tense. Alongside the remastered original, the 2CD edition carries a new remix from Sem Jacobs, while the digital version adds fresh reworks from Chino Negro and Ammo Avenue — a knowing nod to the current wave of producers who’ve been mining big beat and ’90s breaks for inspiration. The set is rounded out with new liner notes from Guardian music critic Alexis Petridis, according to the announcement.
The timing is no accident. Cook is in the midst of one of the busiest late-career victory laps in dance music — the reissue lands on the heels of a sold-out four-night Big Beach Boutique 7 residency on Brighton beach, per the announcement, a callback to the legendary 2002 gathering that drew a quarter-million people to the same shoreline. Few figures from dance music’s ’90s boom have remained as consistently beloved, a career built on the everyman charm he’s displayed in interviews over the years as much as on his records.
There’s also something poetic about “Better Living Through Chemistry” getting the archival treatment at all. This was an album built from crate-digging and cheeky sampling, treated at the time as gloriously disposable party music. Three decades on, it gets half-speed mastering and broadsheet liner notes — the full canon treatment for a record that never asked to be canonized.
For younger fans who know Fatboy Slim mainly as a festival institution, the reissue is a chance to hear where the whole thing started. For everyone who was there the first time: yes, it really has been thirty years.
