Effective weight-loss medications, their use driven in part by celebrities, have entered the broader cultural conversation, shifting the ground around ideas of thinness, beauty, and health. Some experts have raised concern that a wave of images showing noticeably thinner famous faces could have a troubling impact on people already struggling with body image issues or eating disorders.
Allison Butler, senior lecturer in communication at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and author of The Judgment of Gender: How Women are Centered and Silenced in Pop Culture, identifies another complicating factor. Polarized commentary, she argues, does damage not only to the subject but to the people doing the judging.

Experts Urge Curiosity Over Speculation
Rachel Goldman, psychologist and clinical assistant professor at NYU’s Grossman School of Medicine, is direct on the question of celebrity bodies specifically. Public conversations about appearance, even when framed as worry, carry their own risks.
“With celebrities, I encourage people to resist the urge to speculate altogether. Public conversations about celebrity bodies often reinforce the idea that our bodies are open for public discussion, and that’s a message young people are listening to.”
Goldman also flags the unintended effects of well-meaning commentary, whether it takes the form of a compliment or a criticism.
“We also have to remember that comments about someone’s appearance (whether they’re meant as compliments or criticisms) can reinforce the idea that our value is tied to how we look.”
Her guidance to parents is concrete. Shift conversations away from judging bodies toward examining the messages society sends. Remind children that appearance is not an indicator of health or well-being.
“Ultimately, we want young people to understand that their body is just one part of who they are. Their worth isn’t determined by their size or shape, and neither is anyone else’s.”
Kandel’s framework points in the same direction. Checking intention before speaking is not about avoiding the topic altogether.
“I would just check our intentions behind it. What is the purpose of it? … What is the intent versus the impact of it?”
Her summary is pointed: “It can’t be a conversation that we evade, but it’s more of bringing it to the curiosity and the compassion as opposed to the criticism.”
A Parent’s Approach and Grande’s Own Boundary-Setting
Jennifer Hill, 56, a pediatric nurse from Broomall, Pennsylvania, has worked through these questions at home. Her 16-year-old daughter, a cheerleader and runner, dislikes receiving comments about her body. Hill acknowledges that the cultural climate has shifted since the 1980s, but social media has introduced new pressures. Her method is straightforward.
“I will talk to her and if someone has mentioned something to her, I’m like, ‘You know what? Everybody’s different, everybody’s born different, their bodies are created different.’”
The underlying principle, Hill says, is to keep the conversation open and let the teenager lead it. “Communication is key,” she adds. “I think having open conversation and letting them do a lot of the talking and not so much you.”
Grande offered her own version of that principle from the stage on Monday night. Reading from her phone, she addressed the fans directly.
“Multiple things can be true at the same time. Boundaries need to be set.”
Many of those fans are young women. They erupted in cheers.
