Sci-fi fans can now watch Margaret Qualley and Guy Pearce in the R-rated post-apocalyptic film The Dog Stars from the comfort of their homes. The digital release brings the survival thriller to home audiences, giving viewers who missed its theatrical run a chance to experience its bleak, dystopian world without heading to a theater.
The Dog Stars arrives on digital tonight
The Dog Stars arrives on digital platforms tonight, with the release scheduled for 9 p.m. PT on October 26, or 12 a.m. ET on October 27. This means viewers on the East Coast can start streaming the film as Tuesday begins, while those on the West Coast can watch it late Monday evening. The movie will be available to rent or purchase through digital retailers, including Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, and Fandango at Home.
Behind the scenes, Ridley Scott joined Michael Pruss, Mark L. Smith, and Cliff Roberts as a producer on the adaptation, with Smith also writing the screenplay based on Peter Heller’s novel. The story follows Hig, a pilot played by Elordi, who lives in a remote Colorado outpost alongside Bangley, a tough military survivalist portrayed by Josh Brolin. Their isolated existence takes an unexpected turn when an unexplained radio signal prompts Hig to venture toward the unknown.
The film also stars Margaret Qualley, Guy Pearce, Allison Janney, and Benedict Wong. Scott Free Productions and 20th Century Studios backed the project.
Despite its star-studded cast, The Dog Stars has struggled to impress critics. The film currently holds a 41% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, although its audience score is considerably higher at 69%. Meanwhile, IMDb users have rated it approximately 6.4 out of 10. Some viewers have criticized the slow-paced storytelling and familiar post-apocalyptic tropes, while others have praised the cast’s performances.
The film has also underperformed at the box office. Despite a reported production budget of $110 million, The Dog Stars has earned an estimated $39.3 million worldwide, including approximately $15 million in North America, according to Box Office Mojo. Its digital release now gives audiences another opportunity to discover the sci-fi feature beyond its disappointing theatrical run.
