Everyone has a breaking point, and NBC’s Brilliant Minds will examine those breaking points thoroughly in Season 2.
For those who grew up in the 90s, this upcoming season reminds me of R.E.M.’s song, “Everybody Hurts.”
The patients and Dr. Wolf are hurting and breaking down emotionally, and the series is not afraid to take risks.

The Brilliant Minds Season 2 trailer grabbed our attention with a few cases of patients breaking down. It opened with a case of an MMA boxer hitting himself in the face.
While Dr. Wolf strives to think outside the box, this apparently includes jumping inside the boxing ring! Will this start a downward spiral for the esteemed doctor?
I’m excited to see this case play out because Wolf often uses extreme measures to reach his patients.
Experimenting with MMA fighting and hiding a patient could lead to Wolf’s demise, though, as he researches why his patient has no control over his arm and hits himself and others.

It’s an intriguing case and reminds me why Wolf chose this profession.
Wolf likely threw himself into his work because it was the only thing in his life he could control. Learning a new skill like MMA fighting may help alleviate the pent-up frustration he was feeling.
While the trailer didn’t tease Wolf’s family drama, it’s likely what causes him to break down.
His mother is still his boss, so he still has to see her daily and process her betrayal, while deciding if he’ll help his father.

Since a few months have passed, Wolf will likely research a cure for his father, but knowing all the nuances in his life probably made him break down.
He hasn’t had a relationship with his father since he was 15 years old, and now he’ll have to work with his parents again.
Wolf appears unkempt and tired at work, despite generally looking in control, which causes the interns to worry that he has become “unhinged.”
Even the new neurology resident, Dr. Charlie Porter (Brian Altemus), looks concerned.

Wolf acts so off that Nichols checks in on him, which is promising for fans that the two are interacting after Wolf blew him off in the Brilliant Minds Season 1 finale.
The problem is that Wolf won’t let anyone in. I suspect that no one knows about his family drama except possibly Carol.
He keeps insisting everything is fine to Nichols, and that will eventually drive a wedge between the small reconciliation Wolf and Nichols rebuilt.
Nichols’ pet peeve is Wolf pushing him away in times of need.
Wolf is going to break by keeping all these secrets to himself. But we never expected him to be forced into a mental healthcare facility.

I assumed he would send one of his or Carol’s patients there, but that voiceover of him saying “Everyone breaks.” was ominous.
It was also eerie seeing Dr. Amelia Frederick (Bellamy Young) chasing him with her nurses throughout the hallway and restraining him.
What caused him to break down so far? Did he learn another family secret? Did he overstep a line at work, or did the cops think he hit that woman and not the MMA fighter?
Stranger things have happened when Wolf gets overinvolved with his patients.
I love Wolf, so I’m excited to see the series explore the emotional aftermath of his family drama. Zachary Quinto excels at layered performances.
