Beyoncé’s public charity foundation, BeyGOOD, is taking action following the derecho — an inland hurricane — that tore through Indiana last month.
On Monday (Sept. 1), BeyGOOD announced it had donated $200,000 to support relief efforts in Indiana. “The funds will go to City Life Center and Angel by Nature that’s on the ground aiding communities most affected following the record flooding caused by a derecho storm that destroyed infrastructure, leaving more than 1000 people unhoused,” BeyGOOD said in a statement.
“The fund will immediately support critical relief and recovery efforts in the neediest areas, including the city of Gary, providing food, household supplies, and other essential resources to individuals and families impacted by the flooding. Per the Indiana Department of Homeland Security, “On the morning and afternoon of Aug. 11, 2026, a thunderstorm system, preliminarily classified by the Storm Prediction Center as a derecho, crossed from Illinois into northwest and north-central Indiana. The system produced extreme straight-line winds, at least two tornadoes, large hail and flash flooding.”
Following the severe storm’s devastating impact, there were more than 300,000 reported power outages across the state, with Gary hit the hardest and suffering the longest outages. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Black residents make up nearly 80% of the city’s roughly 67,300 residents.
In 2025, BeyGOOD donated $2.5 million to the BeyGOOD LA Fire Relief Fund to assist families impacted by the devastating wildfires.
Before that, the organization partnered with community-based orgs to donate $6 million to mental health services for essential workers during the Covid-19 pandemic and to provide aid to those affected by the Flint Water Crisis, among other efforts.
