This TV special takes the idea behind the original Buzz Lightyear — a toy that doesn’t know he’s a toy — and takes itto a heightened extreme, as Woody (Tom Hanks), Buzz (Tim Allen), and Trixie (Kristen Schaal) take a trip to the house of one of Bonnie’s friends and encounter a massive playset of “Battlesaurs,”dinosaur warriors who engage in gladiatorial combat for the amusement of their sinister leader, the Cleric (TSTTF writer/director Steve Purcell). The whole conceit is very slight, although there are still a decent number of toy-based jokes (like the Cleric’s throne with built-in legs, because he wasn’t designed to bend at the waist) and deep-cut pop culture references. (I want to know who thought up the homage to Beneath the Planet of the Apes.) The notion that Bonnie and her buddies might be too distracted by video games to play with their toys foreshadows the premise of Toy Story 5 too.
