It’s the dawn of a new era for John Legend. The EGOT winner has revealed his new album, Muse, will release Oct. 23 via Republic Records.
The 16-track album was produced in full by Pharrell Williams, with whom Legend co-wrote it. Muse is described as “a cinematic, lush body of work that weaves together the strands of Black music, from gospel and the standards to doo-wop, classic soul, Afrobeat and hip-hop.”
When it was time to work on the album, Legend was intentional about creating a body of work that no one, including himself, expected of him. “I think my repertoire has always been very diverse, but the piano-driven ballads have gotten the most traction throughout my career,” he said. “I wanted to shake up the formula and do something fresh and new.”
Legend and Pharrell decided to work on the album after Legend contributed to Clipse’s comeback album Let God Sort ‘Em, also produced by Pharrell. Legend appeared on “The Birds Don’t Sing.” Legend recalled, “When Pharrell called me, I thought, let’s do this. A lot of people would have imagined we’d done something like this already, but we hadn’t. It felt past due.”
Muse will include the previously teased “Pray For Ya,” which premiered during the Louis Vuitton Fall-Winter 2026 show in January. It will also feature the lead single, “Daylight,” available today (Sept. 8). Legend previewed that track on Monday (Sept. 7) during his performance on CBS’s America’s Tailgate in Nashville.
On “Daylight,” Legend’s soulful vocals soar across a signature Pharrell groove, enriched with booming percussion, orchestral strings and ambient Gregorian chants. The exquisite track finds Legend reassuring his lover that he isn’t going anywhere. “I’ll be here in the morning,” he croons with conviction. “Daylight” features songwriting from Samm Henshaw and Wayne Hector, with recording arrangement from Terrace Martin and Larry Gold.
Circling back to Muse, Legend and Pharrell started working on it in January 2025 at the producer’s studio at Louis Vuitton headquarters, where he also serves as Men’s Creative Director. “Pharrell’s idea from the beginning was that we would create something with all of these classic, cinematic elements, this Black James Bond aesthetic, but with a modern backbeat at its foundation,” said Legend. “You can hear traces of me and traces of him, but it sounds like something new for the both of us. The combination of me and Pharrell, on paper, I think, is a good idea. And the execution is even better.”
Muse will follow 2024’s My Favorite Dream, Legend’s family-oriented album produced by Sufjan Stevens. The Grammy-nominated project included “L-O-V-E” featuring his wife Chrissy and kids Luna and Miles. “I just took it on as a challenge to write some original lullabies and children’s songs that I would want my kids to hear, something we could share with kids and parents all over the world,” Legend said.
Before that, he released his double album LEGEND in 2022. The project earned Legend his fifth consecutive top 10on Billboard’s Top R&B Albums chart. “Until this point, I’ve never used an aspect of my name as the title of an album,” Legend said. “I had to earn that, to live up to it by delivering in the performance and the music. And this is me saying, I’m proud of who I am, I’m confident in the work I’ve done, and I’m just going to declare it.”
