After its requisite storybook opening, Shrek comes out of the gate (well, outhouse) swinging to the tune of Smash Mouth’s “All Star,” immediately letting audiences know that this ain’t your grandma’s fairy tale. “All Star” is just the first of an album’s worth of pop hits both modern and classic that are featured in the movie (a trend the sequels would enthusiastically continue), but Smash Mouth’s cool guy anthem remains the title character’s unofficial theme, conjuring flashes of mud showers and earwax candlesticks whenever it pops up on the radio.
