Savannah Guthrie Had One Big Question In Particular For Serena Williams On Today
Guthrie is known to many as a co-anchor on Today. She’s held this position since 2012, previously joining NBC News in 2007.
Through her position on the show, Guthrie has encountered all sorts of figures. Recently, she had the chance to interview professional tennis star Serena Williams.
During the live episode of Today, Guthrie asked Williams a question many tennis fans were wondering: if she was retired for good or was considering a return to tennis. She asked, “Recently—tell me if I have this right—you reentered the drug testing pool, which some see as the precursor to a return to tennis. So you know I have to ask, are you returning to professional tennis?”

Williams initially appeared to dodge the question with a laugh. She then asked, “I mean, really? Are you asking this on the Today show? Oh my gosh.”
However, Guthrie pushed the question, asking, “Is that a no?” After Williams repeated the ask, laughing could be heard in the background. Guthrie shared she felt things were getting “distracting,” while noting Williams didn’t confirm or deny the question.
Some Fans Felt That Guthrie Needed To ‘Read The Room’
Williams finally responded, “I’m just having fun and enjoying my life right now.” When Guthrie noted this still wasn’t quite an answer, Williams replied, “I’m just gonna see what happens.”
Fans have been wondering if Williams will be returning to the courts in the future. However, some didn’t like seeing Guthrie push the issue during the interview. Notably, the interview was recently released on Today’s YouTube channel, which teased that Serena could make a “possible return to tennis” in the title.
Taking to social media, many of them shared they felt that she needed to “read the room.” That said, some took Serena’s vague answers as a hint that they might soon see her return to tennis. Some comments included:
