It was really tempting to put Amorphis here since they have such a superb history and are still doing great work, but we simply can’t when Ayreon exists.
Without a doubt, Ayreon’s produced some of the greatest and most varied songwriting (“Waking Dreams,” “Day Six: Childhood,” “Carried By the Wind,” “Dreamtime”) and instrumental passages (“Day Four: Mystery,” “Day Eighteen: Realization,” “Progressive Waves,” “Chaos”) in modern progressive music. Although the theatricality won’t be for everyone, most genre fans should adore what Lucassen and company have created thus far.
