There’s a strange intimacy to watching a pop artist strip everything away. Last night at London’s Century Club, 19-year-old Czech singer-songwriter Thera gathered a room of industry faces for a preview of her forthcoming live EP, everywhere, all at once.
Before Thera appeared, the room buzzed with its own warm-up act: England’s World Cup Round of 32 tie against DR Congo played out on a screen at the bar, the crowd wincing at an early Congo goal before England clawed their way to a second-half win. Free-flowing Aperol spritz, wine, and a genuinely impressive canapé spread kept the mood loose and celebratory rather than showcase-stiff.
Then Thera’s manager took a moment to introduce her, framing the scale of what she’s already achieved at such a young age, arena support slots with Jason Derulo and Loreen, and a number-one Czech debut album, before handing things over.
What followed was disarmingly simple: three songs, sung live with only a friend on piano for accompaniment. She opened with the recent single “do you see?”, the clearest showcase of where her sound sits right now. “rain”, a song she’s said she wrote at just 12 years old, landed with an odd double meaning, hearing a teenager’s early attempt at songwriting delivered with the poise of someone years older. “rewind,” the lead single from the new EP and reportedly captured live at Prague’s O2 Arena, closed the trio, and it’s easy to see why it was chosen as the flagship track.
Throughout, Thera sang with a confidence and control that belied both her age and the room’s stripped-back demands, just voice and piano, and she carried it comfortably. The night’s final moment wasn’t sung at all: a new, unreleased track played over the speakers while Thera talked about pivoting toward a new sound with a new producer, something she hinted could surface later this year. It’s a different direction to the arena-recorded live EP she’s currently promoting, but if the snippet played last night is any indication, it’s one worth watching for.
