No Doubt guitarist Tom Dumont announced over the weekend that he has been diagnosed with early onset Parkinson’s disease.
The 58-year-old shared the news on Instagram, just weeks ahead of the band’s Las Vegas Sphere residency, scheduled to kick off next month.
Dumont opened the video by saying he and his No Doubt bandmates are excited for their upcoming shows and have been “looking at old photographs and relearning old songs” in preparation for the residency, noting that the process has “made me think about how grateful for the life I’ve gotten to lead as a musician all these years.”
The guitarist then opened up about his health. “A number of years ago I was experiencing a number of symptoms. I went to my doctor, I went to a neurologist, I did a whole bunch of tests, and I was diagnosed with early onset Parkinson’s disease,” he revealed. “It’s been a struggle, it’s a struggle every day.”
“The good news is I can still play music, I can still play guitar. I’ve been doing really well,” Dumont continued. “I’ve just been very inspired by so many people who’ve come out to talk about their health issues on social media and that sort of thing. I think it helps erase some of the stigma and it raises awareness obviously, and awareness is really important for prevention and for research.”
He ended by emphasizing that he still intends to take part in No Doubt’s Las Vegas residency, saying: “I’m really excited about the shows. I can’t wait to see everybody.”
Among those expressing support in the comments was the Michael J. Fox Foundation, founded by actor Michael J. Fox, who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 1991 at age 29.
“Thank you for sharing your diagnosis publicly. We’re sending you our support, and please know that you are not alone 🧡,” they wrote.
Also expressing their support was Dumont’s No Doubt bandmate Tony Kanal, who commented: “Love you beyond words my friend. Can’t wait to get on stage with you again ❤️”
