The idea of composing a score to a video game is a frequent topic of discussion around these parts. As more and more of our favorite acts make appearances in titles that have player counts in the millions, others are eager to find a way to break into the business either for fame, fortune or simply the love of the game. For John Famiglietti and his noisy industrial group HEALTH, opportunity invited them to the table (literally) so early that it undeniably set the course of their career forever. Rather than writing off the experience of scoring Rockstar’s Max Payne 3 as a one-off, Famiglietti and company leaned into the association, incorporating elements of gaming and anime into their work and contributing more to the soundtracks that accompany them. Their latest release, the companion album to 2023’s RAT WARS, is named CONFLICT DLC. The bond is as undeniable as it is beneficial.
But being the linchpin in this union of controller and “cum metal,” however, only works for one simple reason: Famiglietti is a hopelessly devoted gamer. The bassist streams on the band’s YouTube channel, has run Dungeons & Dragons one-shot campaigns at conventions and tattooed the FromSoftware logo across his chest. This isn’t even close to his first interview focusing on the subject. It’s that kind of enthusiasm that called out to the Kill Feed arcade, leading to a vibrant conversation about his experiences in the games industry, who he feels is the true winner of the console wars, why everyone in the world is a nerd these days and much, much more.
