Necktie Social’s latest album Red Wine Haze showcases the band’s unique ability to make classic rock and blues sound modern. Upon first listen, I hear Iron Maiden, Metallica, ZZ Top, but then, with each repeat listen, Necktie Social’s nuance shines through. There’s a strong post-grunge core—think Shinedown, Foo Fighters, Puddle of Mudd—and even hints of progressive metal bands like Avenged Sevenfold. It’s all there, and that’s what makes Necktie Social’s style so distinctive.
The opening track “Devil’s Backbone” does exactly what a first track should do: it introduces the band. Guitarist Joey Torres offers strong riffs and fun licks. Drummer Corey Davis keeps a steady beat. Bassist Jacob Veal provides the backbone. And, vocalist Dusty Owen delivers powerful vocals. The lyrics also give a thematic overview of the album. “I can’t escape this valley,” Owen thunders, “who will come and ease my soul?” (Devil’s Backbone”). The second track, “Lost My Soul In Georgia,” carries this question further, and the female backup vocals here are a smart, haunting touch.
The titular track, “Red Wine Haze,” is my personal favorite on the album. Before the vocals even start, the guitar playing pulls the listener in and makes it difficult to resist tapping along to the beat. This song also gets more at the existential heart of the record: “I just keep biding my time, looking for answers I’ll never find, it’s alright” (“Red Wine Haze”).
The subsequent two tracks express a sense of urgency, as the speaker contemplates salvation and consequences. Finally, “Hello or Goodbye” concludes Red Wine Haze with a philosophical ballad that feels write out of Ecclesiastes, as Owen croons, “So many years have come and gone, nothing new under the sun.”
Despite its short runtime, the weighty subject matter and rich emotional resonance make the record feel twice as long—in the best way. This Knoxville, Tennessee, band takes the listener on a journey, and with their thoughtful lyrics and bold sound, declare, “Only time can ease the soul, now roll baby, roll baby, roll” (“Hello or Goodbye”).
Release Date for “Red Wine Haze” is January 10, 2025
