We first wrote about SevvTheArtist back in 2021, with her single, ‘Sunshine‘. Now as she returns with her latest rap single, ‘BLU’, we thought it would be great to get to know her a little better.
How involved was your family when you set out to become a musician?
My mom supported me musically when I was a part of marching and jazz band in high school. She attended Friday night football games at James B. Dudley and marched alongside the band in local parades. Initially my family did not know I wanted to pursue music professionally as an adult, my mom is “old school” so she was hesitant at first, but now she see’s my vision and is very involved with helping my dreams become reality.
What are some moments from your upbringing that influence your songwriting the most?
Real life experiences. When I was younger, I wasn’t focused on writing, it was more so the sound of music that I was influenced by. I found my love for instruments and live music first, and later found my voice.
What has been your proudest moment as an artist so far?
The success of my first single “Sunshine” from R&B tastemakers, seeing my music video on BET Soul, watching the premiere with my mom and seeing how proud she was and hearing my song on the radio for the first time.
Which line from ‘BLU’ holds the most personal meaning to you?
“Do you ever wonder why the sky is blue? Do you ever wonder about me and you?” Posed like a question to someone from the past.
Did you face any creative blocks when writing ‘BLU’? How do you usually overcome them?
At first, no because it was a freestyle. I listened to the beat and the hook came naturally. When it was time to vocally arranging the song is where I got stuck. We were actually going to shelf the song because we felt it was still missing something and didn’t know what. I was able to overcome the creative block by inviting songwriters Brandon D and Epsilon The Don to the final studio session to help me flesh it out.
What role do you play when it comes to creating the music videos for a song like ‘BLU’? Are you involved in every step or do you trust the directors take the reins?
I usually have a general idea of what I want the visual to look like. I brainstorm with my team and let them take it from there. I trust the production teams to execute the vision.
What philosophies do you subscribe to when it comes to being an artist?
I’m still learning how and what it means to be an artist, professionally. I’m a student first. So gaining music business knowledge is first and foremost. Authentic artistic freedom is also important in my approach. I also find value in collaborative efforts; I want to prioritize working with other artists across different disciplines to create unique and innovative work.
What can we look forward to next from you?
I’m continuing to build my sound, my catalog and my image ahead of my debut album. Look forward to new music, and all things, SevvTheArtist.
