Hardcore legends Hatebreed brought their 30th-anniversary celebration to Terminal 5 on Saturday, September 27th, joined by Crypta, Harms Way, and Carcass.
Crypta kicked off the show early at 7pm, with a set that proved why the band has been able to cross borders in such a short time. The band from Sao Paulo, Brazil consists of Fernanda Lira (vocals), Luana Dametto (drums) Jessica di Falchi (lead guitar) and Taina Bergamaschi (rhythm guitar). After leaving Nervosa, Lira and Dametto were quick to find guitarists and gained the attention of Napalm Records who released their debut album, Echoes of the Soul. Since releasing that album, the band has successfully crossed over to the States and garnered a loyal fanbase. This was evident in the fans who arrived early to see them open the show. For those new listeners experiencing Crypta live for the first time, it’s certain they left impressed.
Harm’s Way was next; the Chicago-based band consists of James Pligge (vocals), Bo Lueders (guitar), Christopher Mills (drums), Nick Gauthier (guitar), and Casey Soyk (bass). Although I was personally unfamiliar with the band, it was clear that the hardcore fans in the audience were dedicated listeners. The now-crowded venue began moshing to Harm’s Way, with some fans even wearing their merch. Amid the current wave of hardcore in the United States, it was refreshing to see a band like Harm’s Way supporting giants like Hatebreed on such a major tour.
Death metal heavyweights Carcass were the direct supporting act of the night and a band that didn’t disappoint. It was my first time seeing the band, and they took the stage as true professionals, commanding the energy in the venue. With powerful vocals and striking guitar melodies, the band exemplifies why they are considered legendary. The band currently consists of Jeff Walker (bass, vocals), Bill Steer (guitar, backing vocals), Daniel Wilding (drums), and James Blackford (guitar). Carcass’s death metal was the perfect genre to open for a hardcore band, warming up the crowd with moshing and crowdsurfing.
A video featuring some of metal’s biggest names, including Randy Blythe (Lamb of God) and Ice-T, played as a congratulatory message to Hatebreed for celebrating their 30-year career before the band took the stage. As soon as the band took the stage, the venue erupted in noise and the mosh pit sprang to life. Fans crowdsurfed to the front, high-fiving lead singer Jamey Jasta. The band, consisting of Jamey Jasta (vocals), Chris Beattie (bass), Matt Byrne (drums), Frank Novinec (rhythm guitar), and Wayne Lozinak (lead guitar), is regarded as one of the biggest hardcore bands in the genre, playing a significant role in influencing modern hardcore acts. The packed crowd at Terminal 5 was a testament to the band’s enduring legacy and longevity. The band played both old-school tracks and newer material to satisfy long-time fans and newcomers alike. The tour as a whole is one of the best-organized I’ve witnessed in recent years, with every band showcasing their musical talent and getting the audience moving.
