A new Enterprise! A new crew! Picard’s omnipotent nemesis Q! Space jellyfish! What’s not to love about the series premiere of now-classic Trek show Star Trek: The Next Generation? Well, most of it, as it turns out.

Compared to the highs of the rest of the show, pilot episode “Encounter at Farpoint,” which first aired as a 2-hour movie in the fall of 1987, is one of the dreariest installments of a beloved show. The plot — the crew of the Enterprise-D investigates a space station while their actions are judged by an interdimensional being — is fine, but the writing is totally joyless, casting Captain Picard as an irritable leader who snaps at his underlings and surrounding him with one-dimensional versions of what would become his iconic crewmembers. Not the worst TNG, but a weak start to an otherwise great show.
