Zayn Malik was forced to cancel his concert in Mexico last night (March 28) after he came down with “severe food poisoning”.
The former One Direction star was set to perform at Mexico City’s Palacio De Los Deportes as part of his ‘Stairway To The Sky Tour’ but pulled out just hours before the show.
“I’m heartbroken to say that I won’t be able to perform tonight in Mexico City,” Malik wrote on his Instagram Stories. “I’ve been really sick since this morning and, despite trying everything to push through, my body just isn’t allowing it.”
He added: “I’m so sorry to let you down. The love and energy I always feel from my fans mean the world to me, and it hurts deeply to miss this moment with you. Thank you for your understanding, and please know I’m sending all of my love to each of you.”
Hours later he gave a further update. “Mexico, I love you even though myself and many of my crew got severe food poisoning. It’s no joke – still struggling. I’m so sorry,” he wrote.
Earlier this week, he performed One Direction‘s hit song ‘Night Changes‘ for the first time in 10 years at the same venue.
Kicking off his setlist with the song, the crowd could be heard singing along to the lyrics, while Malik looked out into the audience appearing starstruck by the response.
The rendition came nearly a decade to the day the singer announced his departure from the boy band, and marked the first time he has sung any One Direction song in the time since.
The singer previously postponed the US leg of his tour following the death of One Direction bandmate Liam Payne.
He kicked off his UK tour in Leeds last November and at the end of the show projected a tribute to Payne on the screen behind him showing the year of his birth and death alongside the message: ‘Love you bro’. Payne passed away last October after falling from the third floor of a hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
