The Alternative Weekly Roundup is a column where our staff plugs a variety of new releases in a concise, streamlined format. Albums, singles, videos, and live sets. Check back each Monday to see what we were jamming the week prior.
Rosasharin – If This Letter Leaves Candlelight
Texas five-piece Rosasharin put a fresh spin on the early 2000s post-hardcore revivalism that’s en vogue. If This Letter Leaves Candlelight, the band’s debut EP, mixes proggy, razor-sharp riffs with a melodic sensibility that never feels forced.

Carriers – “Blurry Eyes”
Carriers, the project of Cincinnati-based artist Curt Kiser, embodies grit and toughness on his new single. He’s recently acquired the seal of approval from local legends The National, whose Dessner brothers are releasing his upcoming album on their label Brassland. The track conjures open-road Americana with dreamy hypnagogic textures. Kiser wrote the album, Every Time I Feel Afraid, following a catastrophic car crash and gear theft while on tour. On “Blurry Eyes,” he’s unafraid to open up and ask for help while remaining triumphant and self-assured.

Kestrels – “Free Forever”
The latest single off Kestrels’ upcoming Better Wonder is a bright, jangly slice of dream pop. “Free Forever” really kicks into another gear in its final minute when the guitars really let loose and the band get wild with it.

Cheekface – “Growth Sucks”
Calling all Cheekfreaks! Our tongue-in-cheek troubadors have dropped a new single. Cheekface’s new song “Growth Sux” is full of chopped car crash sounds, screams, still with that off-kilter pop sensibility that we love.

Cape Crush / Good June / Impossible Dog – Good Dogs Wear Capes
Massachusetts bands Cape Crush, Good June, and Impossible Dog all pull emo in different (but equally compelling) directions, and their new split EP gives us the best of each. Cape Crush’s pop-punk leanings make a great complement to Good June’s yunahon vibes, and Impossible Dog’s songs are a bit darker. Each band’s vocalist guests on one of the other bands’ songs, too, giving Good Dogs Wear Capes a really collaborative feel.
