Turnstile’s latest era has been a full-out celebration. You could feel that energy, vibrant and blazing, when the band played their album release show for NEVER ENOUGH last night at Under the K Bridge in Brooklyn. Packed with bodies, the evening was representative of everything Turnstile set out to do since their inception in 2010 — feel-good hardcore that gets crowds moving.
Following up 2021’s GLOW ON was always going to pose a challenge, but NEVER ENOUGH continues to amplify its widescreen vision, going bigger with house beats, flute, and cello. There’s also a wealth of features. Will Yip, who oversaw 2018’s Time & Space, helps with production duties. Blood Orange’s Dev Hynes and Paramore’s Hayley Williams (who joined the band onstage during last night’s encore) famously contribute to “SEEIN’ STARS.” BADBADNOTGOOD’s Leland Whitty adds saxophone to “DREAMING,” continuing their collaborative relationship after their joint New Heart Designs EP in 2023. Faye Webster pops up in “TIME IS HAPPENING.” Turnstile have no shortage of people in their corner, and they use NEVER ENOUGH to lift up those friendships.

As the years have blurred, Turnstile continue to subvert expectations — relying on hardcore’s ethos, not its sound. That was apparent when they put on a huge hometown charity show in Baltimore last month, bodies flying as they ripped through songs that embodied their roots and their future.
