BET+ has unveiled its Black Music Month programming for next month. The streaming service ordered a six-episode reboot of Donnie Simpson’s Video Soul, which will debut June 1. Each new episode is 30 minutes.
Donnie Simpson’s Video Soul will keep its original intent intact, bringing on various artists and entertainers to amplify their latest ventures. According to the press materials, it will also feature performances from talent of all generations.
“Through the years, I can’t tell you how many people have told me to bring back Video Soul. I finally listened. Not only am I bringing it back, I’m bringing it back home to BET+. I can’t tell you how excited I am,” says Simpson.
Series guests will include Keith Sweat, Teddy Riley, Shawn Stockman of Boyz II Men, Chrisette Michelle, Raheem DeVaughn, Tweet, Syleena Johnson, Q Parker of 112, Jazze Pha and more.
Rodney Perry, who appeared alongside Simpson as a co-host on the 2021 reboot, will appear in the new episodes.
Executive producers of the renewed series are Simpson, Bart Phillips, Wayne Overstreet, Devin Griffin and Marvin Neil.
The first season of Video Soul premiered on BET in June 1981. Simpson, a radio personality from Washington, D.C., was the network’s first music video host.
Along the way, Sherry Carter also hosted the show where guests included Sade, Whitney Houston, Curtis Mayfield, Anita Baker, Phyllis Hyman, New Edition, Mary J. Blige and many more.
Video Soul ended the music-centric program in the mid-90s. It returned for a reboot in 2021 with Simpson as host and Perry as co-host.
Currently, Simpson, with Tony Perkins, hosts The Donnie Simpson Show via WMMJ Majic 102.3.
