‘In My Head’ is the new pop single from Pigtails, and the song is accompanied by a fun music video directed by her mentor, Nuno Bettencourt.
There’s a lot to unpack when we think of pigtails. They’re associated with being young – school kids, bratty little sisters – Cindy Brady; they’re also worn by those who want to hang onto their youth. On the other hand, they signify patience, because quite apart from the time it takes to plait them, you’ve got to grow your hair to the right length in the first place – and that can take ages. Pop rock singer Pigtails knows how long it takes to grow the fun hairstyle, and she’s so closely identified with it that she’s adopted it as her moniker.
With her sharply-written pop-rock songs, Pigtails shows that she’s got the energy of a young girl while at the same time the focus of a woman who is focused on achieving her dreams. New single, ‘In My Head’, serves as an introduction to the artist and her music, with its melodic hooks and unforgettable choruses.
Drawing on many different sources, including pop-punk, 80s rock, and quite clearly chiptune, ‘In My Head’ is a bop and a half musically, while Pigtail’s vocals are reminiscent of the best of the 70s and 80s – Kate Bush, Lene Lovich, even Madonna – as well as more contemporary artists such as Ariana Grande, and P!nk.
The repeated refrain of “in my head in my head” sees Pigtails earworm her way into your brain, and we’re sure you’ll have it echoing it for quite some time after you’ve finished listening to the song.
Meanwhile, the music video, directed by Pigtails’ mentor Nuno Bettencourt, sees her the star of a hyper-realistic video game. She is in a tunnel-like room, a hangar of sorts, with a door at the back; she’s sealed in. Pigtails is surrounded by inflatable furniture and toys, as well as a self-help book, which she reads, rubber hammers, and cups of tea. We’re looking inside her head, and Pigtails is at the steering wheel, and, while she grabs hold of various levers, she is undoubtedly in complete control.
