The 80s is all the rage right now, thanks to hit shows such as Stranger Things, and as a child of the 80s I’m all for it. Seems that pop artists WHOAA are feeling the same way, and their new single, ‘Saturday Fun’ is a vibe and a half – and we love it!
Back in the 80s in the US there was a legendary fast food chain called Showbiz Pizza. The restaurants featured animals designed by animatronics wizard Aaron Fechter, and The Rock-afire Explosion, was the all-animal band he created. Each member was astonishingly lifelike, with their own distinct personality. They had realistic facial expressions, and incredible charisma, if cartoonish, outsized, and electrica. While Showbiz Pizza has gone to the great big restaurant in the sky, pop-rock duo WHOAA has brought them back in the nostalgic video for their new single, ‘Saturday Fun’.
Comprising vocalists Ashley “Ring” and Dolla “Young Axlrose”, WHOAA seems to have stepped straight out of my favourite decade, with their clothes, attitude, lyrics, and sound all paying tribute to the carefree pop of that era. With glistening synths, rubbery bass, and an irresistibly danceable beat, ‘Saturday Fun’ is a great tune for any day of the week. The music video sees Ring and Dolla finding themselves watching the clock while they slog away at their gruelling jobs; they count down the days until the weekend and they celebrate Saturday in a way that their many fans know they would.
‘Saturday Fun’ is the first single from WHOAA’s upcoming album, ‘The Day It All Changed’, and follows on from their EPs, ‘Broke Hearts Avenue’ (2018) and ‘The Journey’ (2019). The video clip reintroduces viewers to the Rock-afire animals and Dolla and Ring are right at home with them, singing right alongside the band.
