Greg Hoy & The Boys wind up 2022 with their final video of the year, ‘Everybody Wants To Be Somebody’, and they are closing out with a bang, not a whimper.
Greg Hoy & The Boys are nothing if not consistent when it comes to releasing great, danceable, memorable music, as well as keeping their fans well-fed with live performances. They may have just returned from a brilliant East Coast tour, but the Bay-area group have no intention of stopping any time soon, continuing to write and record, and they are already planning to take on 2023 full pelt.
‘Everybody Wants To Be Somebody’ takes its inspiration from Sly and the Family Stone’, with the groove for ‘Dance To The Music’. It’s there from the very first pulsating drum beat from David E. Richman, and is sustained right through to the end. You’ll lose yourself (I certainly did) in the guitar rhythms and lyrics but stop and pause to ponder Hoy’s words:
You’ve got one life to live don’t listen to the voice
That has no say in it you’d better make a choice
This time ain’t coming back see through the hourglass
Stand up and be your friend’s model citizen!
While you’re losing yourself in contemplation of the lyrics, take note of the incredible guitar solo from lead guitarist Jon Reider. Clearly inspired by Van Halen, it’s pure sonic gold, and will have you yearning for more – thankfully all that takes is hitting rewind.
The music video for ‘Everybody Wants To Be Somebody’ was shot in their practice space, in Berkeley, California, and you’ll notice there’s one decidedly not boy in the band, guitarist Vicky Warwick. Greg says,
“Dave, Vicky and I watched two straight hours of MTV from 40 years ago and shot the music video in one take no more than a half an hour later!”
Hoy himself crafted the lyric video, employing an Exacto knife and a cut and paste technique of using green construction paper and words typed on an old typewriter. The end result is one as pleasing as the song itself.
