Betty Beata was born in Hungary to a musically-inclined Romani family, whereupon she took the role of lead vocalist when performing the beautiful folk songs of her culture. By 12 she had moved on to mastery of the work of bossa nova artist, Antonio Carlos Jobim, and had even recorded a selection of his tracks. From there she became the house music and jazz artist, “Delilah”, and her albums featured songs with her husband, the Berklee-trained jazz artist, Dave Sereny.
Now she’s reinvented herself again, as an RnB singer, and her festive single, ‘My Favourite Time Of The Year’ is the perfect match for her vocals.
The name, Betty Beata, sees the artist pay tribute to both her birth name, Beata, and the Anglicised version of Betty. It works well, and serves also to highlight her incredible ability to switch musical genres at will.
‘My Favourite Time Of The Year’, produced by Dave Sereny, captures Beata’s gorgeous vocals and sets them against a soft RnB instrumental, with soothing backing vocalists. It’s as warm and cosy as a winter fire, with all the hallmarks of a certified holiday classic – bells tinkling almost imperceptibly over jazzy bass chords and keyboards, and a gentle percussive rhythm.
The Christmas vibe continues through the music video for ‘My Favourite Time Of The Year’, with Beata walking while checking out the festive lights, watching the snow fall from the warmth of her window, and gathered with friends and family around the dinner table. Above all else, her vocals soar beautifully, ensuring – we hope – that ‘My Favourite Time Of The Year’ becomes a Christmas song we’ll remember for years to come.
