Morris Day, the music legend best known as the lead singer of The Time, has released his final solo album, Last Call, via Bungalo Records/Universal Music Group.
It’s the follow-up to his 2004 album, It’s About Time, which featured West Coast rap alum E-40.
The 12-track album includes the lead single “Grown Man,” which features hip-hop legend Big Daddy Kane. He described the song to Billboard in September as a “coming-of-age” record.
“’Grown Man’ is simply a shout-out to all the grown-ass people out there,” Day told Billboard about the track. “They know what time it is and what it takes to be grown. We don’t roll like the kids no more. But we’ve still got it and know how to use it.”
Last Call also features the Snoop Dogg-assisted “Use to Be the Playa,” which is among Day’s most popular songs on Spotify.
Standouts on Last Call include “Baddest Girl In The Room,” an electro-funk jam with enough sash to have ladies everywhere patting themselves on the back.
Enlisting Flo Rida for a robotic verse, the hyperconfident synthesizer-laced “So Sexy” finds a vain Day boasting about his appeal to swooning admirers.
Jazze Pha, Daddy O, Billy Gibbons, Trinidad Jame$ and Tech N9ne appear on Last Call.
While Last Call day might be Day’s final solo album, he isn’t completely throwing in the towel.
“By no stretch am I retiring. If the fellas — meaning the original [Time] members — want to get back together… there’s always something there. But the solo thing? I’m chillin’ with that. It’s time to do other things,” Day clarified.
Day will support Last Call on an extensive farewell tour that has yet to be announced. According to press materials, the tour itinerary will be shared in 2023.
Last Saturday (Nov. 26), Morris Day and The Time accepted the Legend Award at the 2022 Soul Train Awards.
They also took us down memory lane with a show-stopping performance. Their nine-minute set included “Cool,” “777,” “Jungle Love” and “The Bird.”
