What’s up? It’s your ol’ boy Waldo here, to inform you about some new and upcoming releases, good bad, or otherwise. Remember, I’m not an elitist, you just have bad taste.
Hard rockers …And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead are back with XI: Bleed Here Now. We all know that I’m only reviewing this because I get paid by the word! Anyway, AYKUBTTOD have always been a bit eclectic in their unique brand of…uh… whatever they are. This is not really an exception in that regard. There are a lot of light moments on here and it only hits a more upbeat, kinda raging tone every now and then. Recorded in “quadrasound,” this album harkens back to the days of Zeppelin, Floyd and maybe a little Rush. This, like most of their catalog, is an easy listen but hard to define and seems to take root upon more listens. I dig it. 7 Fucking Pecks.
Black metal/drone/whatever outfit Tombs is back with Ex Oblivion on Season of Mist. The follow-up to 2020’s Under Sullen Skies is kind of rager in its own way. Featuring two originals, two covers and a remix, this EP is cool, if not a bit baffling. Hopefully a “holding place” for fans to hang onto while a new full length is composed. The two covers—“Commit Suicide” (GG Allin) and “Killed by Death” (Motörhead)—are rippers in their own right, but it’s the originals that kinda stand out to this birdbrain. Dark and somber—hypnotic at times—these songs, including the remix, remind of a heavier Joy Division more so than black metal. I have to point out that the title track Ex Oblivion is inspired by an HP Lovecraft story of the same name. Backing it. 7 Fucking Pecks.
