Meek Mill Calls For Change After Fatman Scoops Passing

Fatman Scoop tragically passed away at 53 after collapsing mid-performance at a Connecticut concert on Friday (Aug. 30) night. The rapper, whose real name was Isaac Freeman III, was on stage in Hamden when he suddenly suffered a medical emergency. While many were hoping he’d pull through, the “Be Faithful” creator’s family and friends confirmed his death on Instagram on Saturday (Aug. 31).

“It is with profound sadness and very heavy hearts that we share news of the passing of the legendary and iconic Fatman Scoop,” the official statement read. “Last night, the world lost a radiant soul, a beacon of light on the stage and in life. Fatman Scoop was not just a world-class performer, he was a father, brother, uncle, and friend.”

It continued, “As we mourn the loss of Fatman Scoop, we also celebrate his remarkable life and the countless lives he touched. Fatman Scoop’s legacy is of love and brightness. It will reside in our hearts and memories forever.”

Amid celebrities and fans remembering the hype man, Meek Mill called for a “cultural update.” He was particularly troubled by the fact that some people wanted the show to go on after Scoop collapsed.

“RIP, Fatman Scoop. Prayers to his family! It’s unbelievable to see people still trying to carry on a show after he passed out, which led to his passing!” the Philadelphia rapper penned. “I know it’s nobody’s fault, but damn, ‘We [are] having a good time.’ We need a cultural update since social media!”

Missy Elliott, who teamed up with Scoop on tracks like “Lose Control” and “Level Up (Remix),” also shared her condolences. “Fatman Scoop’s voice and energy have contributed to many songs that made the people feel happy and want to dance for over two decades. Your impact is huge and will never be forgotten,” she wrote on Twitter.
