Grammy-nominated Soul artist Marsha Ambrosius has released a new album, “Casablanco” today, Friday, June 28, her first studio since 2018.
Executive produced by hip-hop and producing legend Dr. Dre, the 11-track album includes recent singles, “One Night Stand” and “The Greatest.”
The project began when Dre and Ambrosius collaborated on some tracks he was working on. Weeks later, the duo decided to create an album together. Ambrosius kicked off the year with her single, “The Greatest,” which was featured heavily in ESPN’s Heisman Trophy promos.
The follow-up “One Night Stand,” an atmospheric soul anthem tells the story of a no-strings-attached romance.
“Casablanco,” embodies the sounds of Jazz, Soul, and R&B with a modern twist and big band, swing sound, hence the “Casablanco” theme- classic sound meets modern sound. Most of the tracks have strings and the piano is quite prevalent. Ambrosious shows her vocal range, control, and versatility throughout the album. In addition, the tracks seem to be backed by real instruments.
The track “Smoke,” has a jazzy feel to it and begins with Ambrosious singing alongside the piano and the strings very sensually and smoothly; then transitions to a brief big-band sound before showing off the modern sound. She “doo wops,” throughout the song
The song talks about Ambrosious being ready to take things to the next level in a relationship and wanting all “the smoke.”
This album is a work of art and really shows the versatility of the Soul singer’s voice. It’s definitely not something we’re hearing on the radio and it’s in a league of its own.
From her time in R&B outfit Floetry to her solo career, Ambrosius has captured the imaginations of fans with her captivating voice and relatable lyrics. With singles like “Far Away,” “Run,” and “Late Nights & Early Mornings,” she shared the raw, intoxicating feelings of loss, heartache, and true connection. And that does not even begin to touch upon her important contribution as a songwriter, crafting tracks for the likes of Michael Jackson, Alicia Keys, Solange, and H.E.R.
“Casablanco,” is available now on all musical platforms. Take a listen below.
