Mahalia is back. The Grammy-nominated singer has released her new EP, Letter To Ur Ex, via Atlantic Records. The five-track project includes the previously released songs “Whatever Simon Says,” “In The Club” and the title track.
On “Forever,” produced by GRADES, Mahalia shows how devoted she is when she’s in a relationship but isn’t interested in being in a one-sided situation.
“My love is sacred / So don’t you waste it / Heard it’s contagious / If you don’t want it, I’ll give it away / Don’t get complacent / Thinking the situation’s never-changing / A little effort is all I crave,” she sings.
Mahalia closes the EP with “Letter To Ur N(ex)t,” which hears her warning her ex’s new partner about his devious ways. Mahalia is sincere in her approach. She doesn’t “wanna sound like a b*tch,” but she also doesn’t want to see another woman go through the turmoil and trauma she experienced in the relationship.
“Woman to woman / You gotta run baby, just like I wouldn’t / You gotta go baby, just like I couldn’t / Before you’re caught in his / Drama, drama, drama, drama,” Mahalia sings on the piano-driven ballad.
Mahalia hopes the EP will inspire listeners to self-reflect. “We’re all fixated on how we can make ourselves better during and after this period of time, but I want people to also reminisce on lovely or painful situations they’ve lived through and how they’ve helped shape the people they are now,” she said in a statement.
Letter To Ur Ex is Mahalia’s first project since releasing her three-pack EP, Isolation Tapes, in 2020. A year prior, she released her debut album, Love and Compromise, which was among Rated R&B’s 30 Best R&B Albums of 2019 list.
Mahalia will support her latest EP on The Letter To Ur Ex Tour. The North American leg kicks off Sept. 3 in San Diego, California. Mahalia will play in other major cities such as Los Angeles, Seattle, Denver, Chicago, Toronto, and Washington, D.C.
The tour will conclude Oct. 8 in Houston, Texas. Tickets are available on Mahalia’s website.
