Leon Thomas makes his first appearance on the Billboard Hot 100 this week as an artist.
The singer, songwriter, and producer’s rising hit “Mutt” debuts at No. 100 on the Hot 100 chart (dated Feb. 8), led by Travis Scott’s “4×4.”
As of this writing, “Mutt” has garnered more than 51.5 million streams on Spotify alone.
Thomas is no stranger to the Hot 100 as a producer. Some Hot 100-charting songs he’s produced include SZA‘s Grammy-winning hit “Snooze” (No. 2 peak), Drake’s “In The Bible” with GIVĒON and Lil Durk (No. 7 peak), and Kanye West and Ty Dolla $ign’s “Burn” (No. 33 peak), among others.
Elsewhere on Billboard this week, “Mutt” remains at No. 11 on the Adult R&B Airplay list, anchored by Coco Jones‘ “Here We Go (Uh Oh)” for a seventh nonconsecutive week.
On the Hot R&B Songs chart, “Mutt” is No. 8 for another week.
“Mutt,” co-produced by D. Phelps and Freaky Rob, is the title track and lead single from Thomas’ sophomore album.
In a 2024 interview with Rated R&B, the Grammy winner shared the story behind creating “Mutt”:
I had just gotten a new painting in my living room. I was sitting on my floor, looking at the painting, and my dog and cat started fighting. I have a female cat and a male dog, and my cat is just hitting him with the skippity-paps. I looked over and saw he was kind of pouting. It was the first time I recognized that me and my dog have similar features. I kind of saw myself in him similar to how relationships happen, where he has good intentions with my cat, but sometimes he gets in trouble, and that’s an interesting journey of control.
Thomas released his album MUTT Sept. 27, 2024, via Ty Dolla $ign’s EZMNY Records/Motown Records.
MUTT was preceded by Thomas’ “Mutt (Remix)” featuring rapper Freddie Gibbs and the second single, “Far Fetched” featuring Ty Dolla $ign. The album included additional features from Wale, Masego, Baby Rose and Axlfolie.
MUTT is the follow-up to Thomas’ 2023 debut album, Electric Dusk. The former project was highlighted on Rated R&B’s 25 Best R&B Albums of 2024 list.
In other music news, Leon Thomas joined Coco Jones on her “Here We Go (Uh Oh) [Remix],” which was released ahead of the 2025 Grammy Awards. The original song was nominated for Best R&B Song and Best R&B Performance.
