John Legend has debuted the official video for his JID-assisted single “Dope.”
The aesthetically pleasing video, directed by Christian Breslauer, opens with Legend sitting in a living room watching a commercial that teases his next single, “Honey.” But the television gets unplugged as a few people are helping to set up for a small gathering. Not long after, the living room is transformed into a dancefloor — and that’s when the ’70s-style house party begins. Legend hops on a mic to perform the track as everyone dances along.
“Dope” was produced by Ian Kirkpatrick and Ryan Tedder and will appear on Legend’s forthcoming album, slated to release this year on Republic Records.
“‘Dope’ is one of my favorite,” said Legend. “I love the energy of the song. I loved collaborating with my gifted co-writers and producers, and JID is one of my favorite emerging artists in hip-hop. I hope the song can be a part of people’s soundtrack for this summer.”
Legend’s untitled album will follow 2020’s Bigger Love, which included his gold-selling singles “Conversations in the Dark” and “Wild” with Gary Clark Jr.
Legend’s new album will feature appearances from Jazmine Sullivan, Jhené Aiko, Muni Long, Ty Dolla $ign, Rapsody and Rick Ross. Long is featured on his upcoming single “Honey.”
On Aug. 5, Legend will resume his Las Vegas residency at Zappos Theater. “My 2022 Vegas residency featuring your favorite songs from my entire career.. full band… beautiful show…magical night,” he wrote in an Instagram caption.
