Fantasia and Adam Blackstone dazzle in evening attire in the video of their bright version of “Summertime.”
Directed by 12vy, the sophisticated video unfolds at Middle C Jazz in Charlotte, North Carolina, showcasing both Blackstone and Fantasia in their finest attire.
In it, Blackstone enchants with his double bass mastery, while Fantasia delivers powerful vocals behind a vintage standing microphone.
In honor of the video’s premiere, Fantasia shared some reflective words about the iconic 1935 song composed by George Gershwin for his opera Porgy and Bess.
“I’ll never forget how this song changed my life on @AmericanIdol. When nobody was voting for me, this song allowed people to see who I really am,” Fantasia wrote in an Instagram caption.
She added, “20 years later, I got a chance to reimagine this classic with my bro @adamblackstone!”
As Fantasia mentioned, before winning season three of American Idol, the Grammy winner won over audiences by covering this jazz standard early in the competition and again in the season finale.
Moreover, her self-titled 2004 debut album features a sensational rendition of “Summertime,” produced by British producer Nigel Wright.
“Summertime” was issued on Aug. 30 via Blackstone’s BASSic Black Entertainment in collaboration with Anderson Music Group.
Aside from her collaboration with Blackstone, Fantasia has been off-cycle, working on new R&B and gospel music.
In December 2023, she appeared as Celie in a musical adaptation of The Color Purple, earning notable acclaim. This year, she received a Time 100 honor and is set to receive an award at the 2024 Black Girls Rock! Awards in November.
In 2025, Fantasia will receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in the recording category.
Since his Legacy album in 2022 and A Legacy Christmas last year, Blackstone has been relatively quiet, at least on new material, even though he has worked behind the scenes with Alicia Keys, Justin Timberlake, Andra Day, and Norelle.
