Pronounced “Dex”, D3X is the stage name of Jordan Adair. Born in Philadelphia, he had his defining moment in high school when he realised life was more than the messing about he’d been doing. He left the people and things that held him back, and threw himself heart and soul into what really mattered.
Part of that was music – inspired by artists like Drake, Lil Wayne, and Kid Cudi, D3X spent years releasing songs on Soundcloud, before placing his self-produced tracks on larger streaming platforms. Eventually he managed to get his 2021 hit, ‘Wireless’, on Spotify’s editorial “Fresh Finds: Hip-Hop” playlist. Now, with an impressive back catalogue, D3X is set to release his third full-length album this summer, titled ‘I Hate I’m The One’.
D3X’s new single, ‘Vacations Matter’, is a lo-fi track inspired by the morning after his 21st birthday party in Miami. The artist had realised how hard he’d been working – teaching kindergarten and attending college by day, while launching his rap career by night – and he needed some time off. With a laid back beat laying the smooth foundation for the track, D3X poured out a stream of consciousness reflection on his dreams, relationships, and struggles. Finally able to process it all, because he’d taken some time off to kick back at the beach.
The music video for ‘Vacations Matter’, directed by Isiah Thompson, was shot along the coast of Southern California, and takes in Malibu’s beaches at sunset. We see D3X strolling along by himself, while the waves lap the shoreline, seemingly in time with his bars. He knows he’s in the right place, both physically and mentally. Don’t we all need to take some time out to re-group and work out our priorities? D3X certainly thinks so.
