Three years after his first mixtape Angel’s Pulse, Devonté Hynes a.k.a. Blood Orange is back with Four Songs, his first release on RCA Records.
Ahead of Four Songs, Blood Orange shared the song “Jesus Freak Lighter” as its lead single.
“Wish,” another dreamy highlight on the project, features additional vocals from Liam Benzvi and Eva Tolkin.
Ian Isiah, Erika de Casier and Bryndon Cook are among the other studio affiliates, new and old, that supported Hynes’ compositions with backing vocals. Each song was produced, written and mixed by Hynes.
Noted earlier, Four Songs follows 2019’s Angel’s Pulse. Guests on the 14-track tape included Tinashe, Justine Skye, Project Pat, Gangsta Boo, Ian Isiah and many more.
Blood Orange focused on the songs “Dark & Handsome” and “Benzo.” He performed the former track for COLORS and unveiled a music video subsequently. The latter track also received an extravagant video.
Other than Angel’s Pulse, as Hynes, he released Fields, a classical album that he recorded in collaboration with Grammy-winning quartet Third Coast Percussion.
He received a 2021 Grammy nomination for Best Chamber Music/Small Ensemble Performance, marking his first career nod.
“This was the first time I’ve written music that I’ve never played, and I love that,” he said. “It’s something I’ve always been striving to get to. Seeing what Third Coast Percussion had done with these pieces was magical.”
Blood Orange continues his time on Harry Styles’ Madison Square Garden residency in New York City, New York. It concludes after two more dates, including Sept. 21 and 22.
