Steve Lacy may admit to having a bit of a “bad habit,” but he’s a hell of a performer.
The alt R&B singer took the stage to perform his three-time Grammy-nominated song “Bad Habit” at the 2023 Grammys, and gave one of the best performances of the night. In performing the song — which was nominated for Best Pop Solo Performance, Record of the Year, and Song of the Year — Lacy brought sheer charisma. He kicked off the performance by giving an adorable thumbs up, smiling straight into the camera, after the song’s verse “You can’t deny a Gemini” played. Lacy, dressed in an all-leather ensemble, sunglasses, and stilettos, sang and played guitar on the funky hit while he was joined by four backing musicians, including none other than fellow alt R&B star Thundercat.

While the performance was simple, it was a stand-out, enigmatic one and got just about everyone in the room dancing, from Taylor Swift to Kendrick Lamar and Beyoncé, proving just how much star power the rising artist has.
It was a big night for Lacy because although he may not have won for “Bad Habit” specifically, he did take home the prize for Best Progressive R&B Album for his 2022 album Gemini Rights. And aside from that, he’s had a major year with the charting success of “Bad Habit” and increasingly becoming a household name — taking that success all the way to the Grammys.
Other performers of the night included award-winners Bad Bunny, Harry Styles, Lizzo, Sam Smith and Kim Petras, an all-star collection of rappers and hip-hop stars to celebrate the 50th anniversary of hip-hop including Missy Elliott, Salt-N-Pepa, and others, and more. Lacy, though, brought a little something special, and it seems likely this won’t be the last time he graces the stage.
