It focusses on punk in its first season, with bands like Iggy Pop’s The Stooges, The Damned, The Ramones and The Slits, all being treated to several hour-long episodes chronicling their rises to the top. In season two the show instead looks at alternative rock, with groups such as The Velvet Underground, and The Replacements, who have inspired many modern bands that we’ve reviewed, coming under the microscope so far.
The upside to this podcast though, is that instead of feeling formal in its presentation, and thus making the episodes feel like boring history lessons, the two hosts embrace the conversational tone, perfectly striking the balance between knowledgeable and funny. Meaning that you always come away from this podcast feeling both wiser, and thoroughly amused.
Song Exploder
We’ve looked at shows that focus on entire bands, but how about one that takes a more minute look at music, and instead purely centres on a single track each episode? Step forward then, Song Exploder, which like the title suggests, takes a different individual song each episode, and then explodes it apart, so that listeners get to explore the many different aspects that made up the finished tune, resulting in learning how they were actually made. It’s presented by Hrishikesh Hirway, whose soothing voice is a calming presence, conjuring up a masterful college lecturer.
The podcast has been going since 2014, and now has over 220 episodes, with an eclectic mix of musicians’ music being featured on the show. Several highlights for the rock lovers include, Iggy Pop dissecting ‘American Valhalla’, Metallica taking a look at ‘Moth into Flame’, and Lindsey Buckingham of Fleetwood Mac, taking apart the magical ‘Go Your Own Way’. The podcast has such an appealing premise, that streaming service Netflix have recently made it into a TV show.
