Back in May last year, Ron Brunk had a life-changing encounter. When nine cats appeared at his back door, rather than ignoring them, he succumbed to their feline charms, thus entering a new phase of his musical life. New single, ‘Windowsill Cat’, is just one of many tracks about his furry friends.
Never one to shy away from asking the big questions while he explores how the cosmic connects to the living world, Ron Brunk’s music strikes a chord, while his lyrics linger long after the song has ended. But not even Ron was prepared for how much these nine furry feral felines would change his life. Standing at the door, peering through the glass, it was as if they were looking directly into his soul, looking for him, and – unknown to Ron until that moment – he was looking for them. Ron Brunk has since discovered that his life was missing the light laughter, and companionship they brought with them, and consequently, his music has likewise been inspired.
Reminiscent of Cat Stevens’ ‘Moonshadow’, the largely acoustic ‘Windowsill Cat’ feels soul-stirring, and almost cinematic. We join Ron Brunk as he watches his cats scarper about, filling up every corner of his home, the acoustic guitar swelling with intensity, to be replaced by an orchestral interval, which slows down and takes over the song, reflecting cats with their high energy just as suddenly dropping off to sleep. The serenity of his lyrics, “wherever I roam, wherever I’m at”, are deeply descriptive of cats and their personalities, reminding us that we can never own them, we are their staff, and only at their behest.
The music video for ‘Windowsill Cat’ is, like most of Brunk’s clips, an animated adventure, following windowsill cats from all over, not just Ron’s crew. Crafted from a collage of photos and video clips, we see animated landscapes as they shift from luminous stained-glass mosaics, to Mondrian-esque abstracts, to sketches as if straight from a storybook. Ron himself appears, playing his guitar, but never once distracting from the real stars of the show, the cats. It’s an homage to his love for his feline friends, and will touch even the hardest of hearts.
