With their roots both coming out of the Southern USA, it’s clear that hip hop and country music could be seen as two sides of the same coin. It makes sense to see collaborations between rap and country, and one of the best to date has to be ‘Southern Boys Dream’, from Florida’s 2 Pistols, and North Carolina’s Cooper Greer.
2 Pistols has recorded with the likes of Tyra B, Trey Songz, Juicy J, and fellow Floridian T-Pain, bringing his searing vocals and essentially rough yet congenial attitude to them all. Now he returns with Cooper Greer, winner of the CCMA Songwriter of the Year Award.
On ‘Southern Boys Dream’, 2 Pistols and Greer sound like they’ve always worked together. When you think about it, it was only a matter of time before they did. While one is a rapper and the other is a country singer-songwriter, they both draw from the same well of Southern USA music, and have similar concerns, and ambitions, and are drawn to the same sorts of sounds. When they step up to the mic, they both give it all they’ve got.
Cooper Greer, with his deep, bass voice and easygoing attitude is perfectly matched to 2 Pistols’ flow. The latter handles the verses, while Greer takes on the choruses, and together the song comes together in heavenly harmony.
The music video for ‘Southern Boys Dream’, naturally, takes the viewer into the deep south. With direction by Jeremy Saunders (ie, 2 Pistols, using his government name), fans are seated in a Bronco truck, alongside a beautiful blonde. We take a trip down dirt roads, and past fishing holes and cleared swamps, and a fortress wall of trees. It’s works perfectly with the song, and serves as the natural visualisation of the song.
