Neil Young has expressed his admiration for the new Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown, calling it a great tribute to Dylan’s life and music. In a post on his website, Neil Young shared his love for Dylan and his music, recalling a funny incident where he unknowingly kicked Dylan off his bus, but assured fans the movie is worth watching.
The film, starring Timothée Chalamet as Bob Dylan, showcases the iconic musician’s rise during the early 1960s folk scene and his controversial 1965 performance at the Newport Folk Festival, where he famously played electric instruments for the first time.
“I love Bob Dylan and his music. Always have. He’s a great artist. Once he was on my bus and I didn’t recognize him and threw him off but that’s another story. This movie is a great tribute to his life and music. I think if you love Bob’s music you should see this great movie. I loved it.”
The movie was released in the United States on December 25 and will be out in the UK on January 17. Neil Young, a longtime admirer of Dylan, also shared a fond memory of performing alongside him in Martin Scorsese’s 1978 concert film The Last Waltz.
Dylan himself has praised Chalamet’s performance, calling him a “brilliant actor” and expressing confidence in his portrayal of a younger version of Dylan. Dylan also contributed to the film’s script, meeting with director Jim Mangold multiple times to review and discuss the screenplay.
The Complete Unknown has been highly regarded by critics, with NME awarding it four stars. The film has sparked renewed interest in Dylan’s music, encouraging both new listeners and long-time fans to dive deeper into his vast catalog.
