It’s never too late to start over, or so my astrology app tells me. Difficult life changes–a new job, a breakup, or a long-distance–invigorate our understanding of ourselves and the world around us. We do ourselves a disservice by cocooning in the mundane and stagnant. Performing as Morpho, Kristy Chapman sheds her old skin, giving way to a gleaming and self-assured version of herself on her debut EP, Morpho Season.
We have enough songs about heartbreak and loss. Morpho steers clear of wallowing, choosing to emphasize growth, renewal, and mundane pleasures. “Prism” finds her distracted by flashes of memories and glimmers of refracted light, ideating the disconnect between rosy-tinted memories and shared reality.
She then scrutinizes an old relationship in the rearview mirror on “The End” but emerges with lessons and acceptance. Standout track “Half of Two” showcases Chapman’s neat guitar skills. A fluid guitar solo conjures a warm and lively show for indie rock’s next best thing.
Instead of elaborating on her painful experiences, she speaks from a place of peace and healing. Morpho Season details a journey from anguish to freedom with soft-spoken vocals and cozy instrumentals.
